Friday, June 5

A summer evening of musik en der scheierhof, or Music in the Barnyard, will be featured beginning at 7 p.m. at the Montgomery County (PA) historic site, the Peter Wentz Farmstead, 2100 Shearer Rd., Worcester PA. Girls from Mars, a vocal trio with bass, trumpet, snare drum and guitar accompaniment, will be the night’s performers. Audience members are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and picnic baskets. A donation of $5 per person is suggested. In case of rain, the concert will be moved to the Worcester Historical Society’s Farmers’ Union Hall on Valley Forge Road.

Up for a challenge? The Amity Chess Club meets from 7-10 p.m. at St. Paul’s UCC Church, 1312 Old Swede Rd., Douglassville PA, for chess matches and lessons at all ages and skill levels. For more information, call 610-385-6324.

An adult dance and mixer featuring the best hits of the 50s, 60s and 70s will be held from 7:30 p.m. to midnight at Sunnybrook Ballroom, 50 Sunnybrook Rd., Sanatoga PA. Happy hour with drink specials will be conducted until 8:30 p.m.. Admission at the door costs $10.

The Schuylkill River Sojurn, a 110-mile, seven-day guided paddle down the Schuylkill River, begins this morning in Schuylkill Haven PA and ends June 12 (2009; Friday) in Philadelphia PA. Along the way, the paddling party will land for a night at the borough’s Riverfront Park on College Drive, Pottstown PA. Those interested in making the trip can register for one or all days by calling 484-945-0200.

Outdoor recreation and healthy living will be celebrated through the day today during National Trails Day festivities at Valley Forge National Historical Park’s Betzwood Picnic Area, located on the north side of the park, 1400 N. Outerline Dr., King of Prussia PA‎. Visitors can hike along the River Trail, participate in educational clinics, fitness assessments, view partner exhibits and more designed to promote the rewarding relationship between good health and our natural environment. The event is free and open to the public.

A community flea market sponsored by the Limerick (PA) Township Parks and Recreation department will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Limerick Community Park, Swamp Pike and Ziegler Road, Limerick PA. The flea market is open to buyers at no cost; vendor spaces are available at a cost of $10.

Marcia Clouser, a birder and lecturer at Ursinus College in Collegeville PA, will lead a guided walk beginning at 9:30 a.m. to identify local birds in their habitat on Spring Mountain in nearby Spring Mount PA, nine miles northeast of Sanatoga village. The walk is sponsored by the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy. Fees are $7 per person for conservancy members, and $10 for non-members. A continental car show featuring American cars is scheduled to be held June 7 (2009; Sunday) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4059 Skippack Pike, Skippack PA. The event includes a car corral, BBQ Fest, face painting for kids, and trophies and baskets for car show winners. An alternative rain date is June 14.

The open-air producers’ market sponsored by the Pottstown Downtown Foundation runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the parking lot located at the corner of Charlotte and High Streets, Pottstown PA. Vendors of home-grown fruits and vegetables, as well as crafters and artisans, are expected to be on hand to sell their wares to the public. Free live entertainment will feature local talent.
