Getting and keeping Pottstown area residents healthy is the foundation's interest.

LIMERICK PA – Health- and fitness-related programs proposed by the Spring-Ford School District, as well as those in Pottsgrove and Pottstown, are among the recipients of more than $715,000 in total grant funding this spring and summer from the Pottstown Area Health and Wellness Foundation, according to a foundation press release issued Aug. 7 (2009).

“We are excited to see … local schools and organizations continue … in their efforts in creating and improving health and wellness programs and services, in spite of our current economic status,” foundation Executive Director Dave Kraybill said.

The foundation offers grants to local schools and non-profit organizations that offer programs motivating people to adopt healthy lifestyles. Its money comes from proceeds of the sale of the formerly non-profit Pottstown Memorial Medical Center to Community Health Systems of Tennessee.

Its long-term goals are to reduce behavioral risks, improve access to medical services, enhance formal and informal supports, and improve physical and social environments. In the spring grant round, programs of the three school districts were among 16 that attracted $530,632 in foundation investment. Another $159,741 in grants was paid for support programs, and $25,000 for environmental programs.
