ALONG ROUTE 29 – Monday (Sept. 7, 2009), the national observance of Labor Day, was for many in Montgomery County (PA) a day for family, friendships and fun.

It’s somewhat of a tradition for the county’s western residents to travel Route 29 north from Collegeville to Pennsburg on Labor Day in pursuit of yard sale bargains. The Perkiomenville Auction, located at about the mid-point of the 17-mile trip, has during the past 20 years almost singlehandedly spurred a minor industry in such Monday holiday sales. The Labor Day events are the last gasps of the summer sale-hunting season; there are at least three per mile along the route.

The Post went for the ride too, looking more for interesting sights than a good deal.
