HARRISBURG PA – State-operated prisons across Pennsylvania, including the State Correctional Institution at Graterford PA, have added an emergency warning system called AlertPA to tools they use to notify the public of prison emergencies, Gov. Ed Rendell said Monday (Nov. 30, 2009).

Beyond its use at the prisons, Rendell added, AlertPA also is capable of providing state residents with timely information during almost any urgent situation. Individuals who register online can request notifications involving nuclear power plants, failure of large dams, toxic chemicals, inclement weather, warnings, public health problems, airport delays, and consumer product recalls.

Users can choose their desired method of notification – pager, text or email – and select what type of information they want to receive.

People who are interested in receiving prison alerts, but who lack access to the Internet, may contact their nearest state correctional institution’s critical incident manager to have their names and phone numbers added to the AlertPA system. They will receive voice messages by phone.
